About the author

Valerie Cumming, Assistant Director of the Museum of London, studied the history of dress at the Courtauld Institute of Art. She was the first curator of the Court Dress Collection at Kensington Palace. She lectures widely to students, collectors and designers and has written two previous Batsford books, Gloves and Exploring Costume History 1500-1900.
